My Student’s Blog

I’ve talked a lot about my Positive Psych course the past few months. The last day of class was a work period for their final assignment — a reflection about their experience — during which we listened to our playlist from throughout the semester. As the last few students got up to leave, I found myself almost getting choked up. The song that just so happened to be playing in those final moments of our time together was “We’re Here […]

Plugging into hyflex

9X9X25 In the summer before starting my new career as a HyFlex professor, I searched for HyFlex faculty across North America and the name Dr. Brian Beatty caught my eye. I looked him up on LinkedIn and sent him the following message: “I’m reaching out from Ontario, Canada in hopes you may be willing to provide me with some guidance for a brand new post-grad certificate program I’ll be teaching using the HyFlex model. Link to program description: http://catalog.cambriancollege.ca/chsn/#text I’d […]

Bursting at the seams with gratitude

9X9X25 I imagine myself reading this 20 to 30 some years down the road and reminiscing about my first years of teaching. My first semester as a full-time faculty in a brand-new program is coming to a close soon. I remember back in August, a seasoned faculty told me that I’ll blink and it’ll be Christmas. Well, she was right. In Positive Psychology, the state of flow is described as being in a time warp, where time speeds up or […]

Test Tube Teaching

9X9X25 This semester I dabbled in low stakes testing. After an enlightening presentation by James M. Lang this past summer, I was inspired to see whether lowering the stakes might help prevent cheating. I’m happy to report that it has been successful! For any of my avid readers, I’m sure you remember vividly how I have 10 positivity experiments for a total of 5% each and 8 quizzes for a total of 5% each. Throughout all of the experiments and quizzes, many […]

The Gingerbread Campus

9X9X25-ing I am learning balance. When I first started my full-time career as a professor, I mourned Fridays and longed for Monday’s. All I wanted to do was work, which probably sounds like, well, work, but as my mom described “it’s play time for you.” Never before had I felt the level of passion, autonomy and creativity that I have over the last three months. It’s like every date is a trip to the candy store. In fact I may […]

Gremlins in the classroom

I brought gremlins into my class last week. Pink ones, green ones, yellow ones, blue ones, some with two eyes, others with three. (In actuality, they were mini figures from Monsters, Inc.). Gremlins want to eat all the junk food and sugar available, watch Netflix and YouTube instead of studying, all while sitting on the couch instead of exercising. When our gremlin is in charge, self-control is not an easy feat. My positive psychology class was inspired by a book […]

Are you teaching with your signature strengths?

9X9X25! I recently retook the VIA Character Strengths survey and my results listed creativity as the second highest. What is this survey I speak of, you ask? The website has tons of great information: It’s based on the research of Martin Seligman and his colleague who scoured the literature to determine 6 virtues and 24 corresponding characteristics that are universally valued, regardless of time, place and culture. The survey is a result of their research which allows the general public […]

Handcuffs are off

Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay AND Day 4 of #OCDAwarenessWeek AND my 3rd post for the 9X9X25 challenge (okay, maybe the last piece is not as exciting). If I haven’t yet formally introduced myself, I’m the coordinator and a professor for Cambrian College’s brand new post-graduate certificate program in Community and Health Services Navigation. I adore my job. It’s a dream career, except it’s not a dream. It’s a reality career, but that just sounds weird so back to dream career. How […]

While I didn’t build a robot, I found a cool scheduling app

The Technologist Module was intimidating but I think I got through it. I feel like I should be emerging with a prototype for a robotic teaching aid. Here’s my journey to become a technologist: Destination 1: Digital Literacy After perusing the provided reading about digital literacy, I concur that it is an ongoing process. Last year I asked students for ideas for the following semester and Kahoot! was the consensus of what I should implement. I was awestruck by a […]
