Thanks to Ang, Lisa, Lynn, Robin, and Mazi for joining me today for an Active Learning Strategies workshop. Our Centre for Teaching and Learning have seen a decline in attendance in our face-to-face workshops. We have seen a big uptake on our asynchronous online modules. We realize our faculty are finding it harder to make it to sessions on campus. The asynchronous online modules offer more flexibility to our faculty. However, some of our faculty prefer their professional learning in […]
Welcome to the Technologist module! You'll find a lot of wonderful resources at the Technologist Module on the Extend site.A few years ago, while teaching Math for the Computer Industry course to our students in their first semester of the Computer Programmer and Computer Systems Technician - Networking programmes, I wanted to find a better way to introduce fundamental concepts of Statistics (mean, median, mode) to my students. At the same time, I wanted introduce spreadsheets to them. Al...
There are so many ways to define digital literacies. I like this one from Jisc: "those capabilities which support living, learning, and working in a digital society". Doug Belshaw presented us a list of definitions for digital literacy in this slide presentation. He asks whether it is possible to have "one definition to rule them all" - hence the term "digitial literacies." Digital literacy is... the ability to find, evaluate, utilize, share, and create content using information tech...
They say that "the best camera is the one you have with you". I love my 'big' camera (Nikon D7000), but I have taken more pictures with my smartphone. If you are like me, it's your "go to" camera - because it's always with you. Of course, the DSLRs are much more versatile, but smartphone cameras are getting better and better. Here are some close up photos I took for this Daily Extend. They are all CC licensed. They are all […]
Here are some slides I would offer to you as an example of good slide design. This first set is from a slide deck titled "Creating Dynamic Slide Presentations". The concepts in these slides are from an article called "How Cognitive Science Can Improve Your PowerPoint Presentations" based on the work of Stephen M. Kosslyn. I've looked to Garr Reynolds and Nancy Duarte for guidance in slide making. Garr has a site called Presentation Zen - I promise that if […]
This Extend Daily is a great chance for me to reflect on happiness. Thanks @ontarioextend for the opportunity. I found this quote that I think spoke to my heart. "If you want to find happiness, find gratitude" - Steve Maraboli And here's some curated pictures on happiness.Sharon Our kids (photo when they were younger) A walk in the forest) A quiet setting) Collaborating with wonderful people Good food Good tech (especially when it is shiny and new This is very […]
I'm exploring my new MacBook Pro. I asked Siri "What time is it?" - it told me the time and then said "Happy St. Patrick's Day!"I always get excited when I get a new laptop - a new thing to explore. It certainly feels much faster than the 3-year old laptop it replaced - so much snappier! But I bet 3 years ago, I felt the same way about my now 'old laptop'. I wonder how long it will take […]
In our ADP session today, we had a three-way videoconferencing session with our Owen Sound, Orillia, and Barrie campuses. We've come a long way from the early days of videoconferencing at the college. Sound is so much better now thanks to the hard work of our Media Services department. We also used Zoom for a pairs activity between Owen Sound and Barrie faculty. The Breakout rooms worked like a charm!
When students come to class, we can't assume they know how to learn effectively. Fortunately, The Learning Scientists have an awesome set of resources on this. They have downloadable materials on the following strategies Spaced Practice Retrieval Practice Elaboration Interleaving Concrete Examples Dual Coding All these links can be also found on their Downloadable Materials page. For each of the strategies, they have a poster slide deck bookmark guide bookmark p...
I love camera apps! So today I tried Halide. With Halide you can do manual focus, set the ISO, etc. Here's shot of the new N Building at Georgian.I hardly use Halide, but it's a cool app. But I do use Hipstamatic. Here are two shots taken with different lenses and films. If you have not tried Hipstamatic, give it a try! And lastly, one app I've never tried is Photobooth. And just like it suggests, it creates a strip […]
