Carry On, Carry On

Today in #ExtendmOOC, it is finally time to really get down to business. Module One is launched! The week we spent getting to know each other in Module Zero has been just a wonderful, fun time seeing educators from all over the place, geographically and discipline-wise, get to know each other a bit. There have been just a boatload of responses from participants sharing where they are and what they do and what they hope to get out of this […]

Ontario Extend mOOC: the soft opening

Yes, life gets curse-like interesting when after mocking something you end up using it. But here we go, the edX hosted mOOC (medium sized Open Online Course) I’ve been working on is getting its first visits. The making of this remains to be blogged (can everything ever be all blogged?), but I assembled a short promo video mixing together an animation by the talented artists at eCampus Ontario, with voices and videos from past participants. Again, we are taking the […]

Pick Your Fav!

This is an informal poll of current Ontario post-secondary people and what they might like to see covering their free textbooks. That’s right ~ free! eCampusOntario has worked hard to bring you a robust library of open textbooks ready-to-use in colleges and universities, but also open for adaptation and customization to suit the needs of particular courses. Check them out here: https://openlibrary.ecampusontario.ca/Register your preference for a cover look using the quick poll. Help even more by providing some comments on […]

Come As You Are

Take your time. Hurry up. Choice is yours. Don’t be late.Kurt Cobain It’s almost time to come in. The Ontario Extend mOOC opens next week. Well, the lobby will be open. We will be hanging out in Module Zero, getting to know each other a bit and chatting about what to expect over the next 12 weeks. Your starting point is wherever you are right now. Come as you are. Ontario Extend will help you fill up several pedagogical buckets. […]

The value of micro-credentials and badging

I recently attended a learning outcomes symposium organized by the Council of Ontario Universities, the organization that is responsible for the university sector affairs of the 21 major universities in our Ontario (Canada) system. The keynote speaker, Ryan Craig, from University Ventures, surprised the audience with some challenging ideas taken from his recent book, A New U: Faster + Cheaper Alternatives to College.  I was somewhat confused by the sense of fright that many of my colleagues in the audience […]

Oh The Irony of Driving This Train

Sometimes your own blogging can turn around and nip at ya. One of my favorite tags of posts has been moocmocking. Now I’m riding the train, gimme an “M”… That’s right, now my current project is helping eCampus Ontario run a new round of the Ontario Extend project, starting January 2019… as a mOOC (medium sized Open Online Course). Ontario Extend “is a capacity building initiative that is grounded in the belief that the impact of learning should be the […]

The Proverbial Why Blog Post (and is it a Howitzer?)

Blogging about blogging is a repeated trope inside this blog and I’d bet commonly elsewhere. Why do it again? It seems appropriate for my last (and consistently late, but one of the things about blogging is making your own rules) of nine posts for the Ontario Extend 9x9x25 challenge. I actually realized I was more than a few short, so resorted to back tagging 2 previously written ones from early October. Sue me (and c.f previous parenthetical on rules). After […]

Annotating As Augmenting? Coming to a Web Near You

Here goes one of those blog posts that start out with only a shred of an idea, so in the writing, maybe something emerges. Anyhow, for the Ontario Extend 9x9x25 its really writing about what you are thinking about, right? I’m thinking about a project I am working on with Gardner Campbell. Yes, that Gardner Campbell. We go way back, Dru Glu and I, and his ideas (see personal cyberinfrastructure and Bag of Gold) are foundational to much of the […]

The Legacy

I’m going to use my final Ontario Extend 9x9x25 post space to try to drum up some interest in a legacy project. Ontario post secondary institutions all have access to Pressbooks EDU sites. I think we should use one to make a Greatest Hits “album”. As of this writing, the 9x9x25 activities have generated 339 blog posts from 44 different blogs. That is 7.7 each. Which either means that lots of people made it at least close to the end, […]

Doing/Making Dailies

Someone has to make the donuts dailies every day, and few do it better than Terry The Baker Greene (who does it with sauce). This is close to Terry’s method: Or as he 9x9x25-ed: If I were asked to name the top 2 things that have helped me to not only develop and hone my abilities as an educational technologist, but also lead me down rabbit holes that have crafted my attitudes and values and love for this whole ed-tech […]
