Technologist Module – All aboard!

Welcome to the Technologist module! You'll find a lot of wonderful resources at the Technologist Module on the Extend site.A few years ago, while teaching Math for the Computer Industry course to our students in their first semester of the Computer Programmer and Computer Systems Technician - Networking programmes, I wanted to find a better way to introduce fundamental concepts of Statistics (mean, median, mode) to my students. At the same time, I wanted introduce spreadsheets to them. Al...

It Came From #DS106: a Direct Line to Ontario Extend

Easily the most influential experience that has informed both my work in educational technology and the way I teach has come from the experiences I had being part of since 2011 as an open participant, teaching in person and online, and building out much of the web infrastructure for DS106, the open Digital Storytelling course community. In 2018, DS106 is still going strong, long after many things like MOOCs peaked and fell into the Gartner trough. There’s not enough blog […]

Reflective scholarship is a portal to improved practice

Greetings #ExtendEast – @ontarioextend Extend East Cohort – and welcome to the Scholar module. When I was thinking about how to construct the Scholar module, it didn’t take long for me to think about the most challenging moment I’d experienced as a teacher during the last few years. Much of my recent experience had been as an online instructor in UBC’s Master of Educational Technology (MET) program, which is fully online experience for students. However, when I was asked to […]

Experimenting begins with play

I’m excited for the Extend East cohort to kick off the experimenter module this week. While it is its own stand alone module, in truth, extenders have been experimenting for weeks already. For some, just creating a twitter account and getting “followed” is a whole new unnerving experience. For others, trying the timeline tool and tweeting out a link. In this module, we’re invited to try new things, share them, and reflect on what the experience. This is what we […]

Walk, Don’t Run

There’s no rush. This week in the Ontario Extend East Cohort, we are kicking off the Collaborator Module. There’s a high chance that you haven’t finished any of the previous three, yet. And that is more than okay. This is open learning. The modules are there waiting for you to go back to them when you’re ready. One of the main influences to the way Ontario Extend was built and is delivered is something called ds106, a wonderful community/way of life. Its […]

Cultivating Curators

Greetings Extenders! From Twitter and Terry talks, you folks are thoroughly engaged and committed to ‘extending’. Kudos! You have just finished Joanne’s thoughtful and interactive module on Technologist. Boy, do I hate following her. This module is a basic introduction to the act of curation or choosing appropriate and engaging  resources as you design and develop your inclusive learning environments. Curation can showcase your creativity, commitment, and searching skills, but there is a downside. The act of curating is also […]

So you wanna be a Technologist?

Welcome to the Ontario Extend Technologist Module! Personally, I think it’s one of the top six Ontario Extend modules and look forward to your participation. The story of how the Technologist module came to be started when our development team was considering different pedagogical approaches to the Ontario Extend program modules. Design thinking was deemed an obvious and natural fit for this one. Why? Well, when it comes to use of technology, it is usually for one of two reasons […]

What can we do to ensure that we teach for learning?

Hello and Welcome to the #ExtendEast-ers  – the @ontarioextend Extend East Cohort –  as you begin  exploring the Teacher for Learning module.  I cannot wat to see what you do for, and with, the activities. You might be wondering (as those who have gone before you have wondered) why a module about Teacher for Learning?  Why else do we teach but for learning? Yet, I am sure we can all find examples of accepted teaching practices that appear to be […]
